Review: Les faits accomplis by Anna Martin

Adam Hemlock rules the elite New Harbor Academy. With his mother in Paris, he throws hedonistic, alcohol- and drug-fueled parties for his equally rich, desperately bored classmates. How’s a guy who lives life to the extreme to stay entertained? Take on a challenge, of course, and hope the exhilaration of the play-by-play fallout chases away the indifference. At the big pre-senior-year bash, Adam’s offered a dare—seduce the new kid. Adam initially laughs off the idea but changes his mind when he sees Jared.

Jared Rawell has spent the past two years at a Texas military school, where his father sent him to “pray away the gay.” He sees the academy in more liberal Washington as a chance to start over and achieve the grades he needs to get into an Ivy League school. When a beautiful but terrifying girl offers Jared a deal—don’t sleep with Adam Hemlock and she’ll help Jared get through senior year—he sees no reason to say no. But nothing is as simple as it seems.

With layers of hidden agendas, backstabbing, lying, cheating, drugs, and entitled teenage egos, Jared and Adam must navigate a high school minefield while waiting for the inevitable explosion.

So fetch.

Clare is THE mean girl. The 90's kid in me loved every stereotypical, teenage, drama filled second of this.

When Jared arrives at New Harbor academy he has the attention of Clare. Clare is The Head Bitch and her #1 priority is to fuck with people.
"I'm thinking," he added, answering Clare, "that you're all batshit fucking crazy."
"You'd be right," she said simply." "Wanna play with the big boys?"
"Always."
[...]
"You asked who runs this place," Clare said. "And it's quite easy, really. Biggie might hold court, but Adam will want your ass."
"I have no idea who Adam is, let alone any intention of giving him my ass."
"You will."
And so it begins. Jared is right, these people are batshit fucking crazy! No joke.

It's kind of like a She's All That type of storyline. You know, Freddie Prinze Jr.? Where he takes a bet to make the nerd girl popular? Kind of like that because of the whole bet deal, but not really because Jared was never a nerd, mostly because he just didn't give a crap what everyone thought. He was mysterious and aloof. They wanted to break him and he didn't let it happen. He at least didn't let them see it happen.

Adam and Jared grew closer and closer, but THB (a.k.a. The Head Bitch a.k.a. Clare) had them both hanging on the opposite side of a bet. But their friendship/relationship developed outside of all the drama. When they are behind closed doors, away from their classmates, they could just be Adam and Jared and it was glorious. Things were progressing smoothly, naturally, they were so great together. It's like they forgot about the bet. And I think I forgot about the bet because I was just so into them.

Then two little words almost killed me.

The Caddy.

Oh, you'll know it when you read it. I got a little ragey when The Drama went down. I could have smacked Adam! I really wanted to. I wish I could have.

It's like the kids existed in their little bubble of drama. They couldn't see past all the stupidity they caused and couldn't escape it, they just had to learn how to survive it. Thank goodness Adam and Jared did. The went with it, sometimes fueled the fire and soaked up the drama when they were with their friends. But when they were alone... *sigh* That's when I fell in love.

Les faits accomplis ended on the perfect note. I'm not sure it was a solid HEA, but I have complete faith that if Jared and Adam can survive Clare and Biggie, they can make it through anything.
